Material & Craftsmanship:
The piece is expertly carved from a single block of heavy, premium green Verdite / Serpentine stone. The artisan brilliantly utilized the natural variegation of the rock, contrasting a smooth, high-gloss polished finish on the face against a raw, stippled texture to give depth to the hair and beard.
Spiritual Philosophy: Many traditional Shona carvers believe they do not create the sculpture themselves.  Instead, they believe a spirit or the inherent form inside the rock "whispers" to them, guiding their chisel to release the figure.
